- In my position of 10 years at Master Data Center, I was responsible for the conversion of customer data and legacy systems (including COBOL) into different formats usable by their software. These processes involved Data Mining, Data Manipulation and Data Conversion.
Data Scrubbing: (a.k.a. "Data Cleansing") In many cases, the data provided by the client was incorrect, contained typographical errors or was in some way unusable by the company's software. Our validation process identified various types of errors, identification and correction of missing or incomplete data, processing of duplicate and redundant records, processing of inconsistent data, processing of dates for Year 2000 consideration and custom validation ("Company Rules"). In addition, I extracted data using Data Junction software, wrote "tickler" reports, ran ad-hoc SQL queries and imported data into other software.
Quality Control: Our process produced error listings that were provided to the client so they could make corrections to their data before the final conversion. Since a conversion might take anywhere from 2 months to a year, this repetitive process resulted in an overall improvement in the quality and reliability of the conversion, which was necessary before importing into the company's system.
Data Normalization: In many cases, the data provided by the client was inconsistent or in a form not directly usable within the company's software. Our Data Normalization process standardized addresses and abbreviations, standardization of codes via lookup tables (state, county, location, etc),
Custom Data Conversion: I also designed a system in MicroSoft Access ("ProSpec") that the other conversion programmers used to track the conversion specification and instructions. I used Visual Basic, SQL Server, MicroSoft Access, Excel and QuickBasic to create this specialized solutions.
Other Skills: Other skills and techniques used for this position included problem-solving, software troubleshooting, database design and technical documentation. In many cases, the end result was the creation of an Access database for use by the remaining conversion process.
